Classic Christmas Stocking Free Crochet Pattern
The Classic Christmas Stocking is a basic red stocking with fur trim, and can be finished in a few days, just in time to hang on the mantle. Probably, the trickest thing about this pattern is the heel, but once you understand the placement, it should be smooth sailing from there. This stocking uses single crochet and half double crochets throughout, and it can be customized any way you want. Guage is not very important, but I have included notes about changing the size. Really, you can use any yarn or colors you like. For my sample, I used Madelinetosh Dk Twist and Lion Brand Go For Faux Fur yarn. Materials Needed:
D-3.25 mm hook( I used a Furls Odyssey)
1 skein, Madelinetosh Twist DK in Scarlet, or any weight yarn you’d like(see pattern notes)
Lion Brand Go For Faux Fur yarn in Baked Alaska, or a small amount of similar fur type yarn (only a few yards needed)
Scissors
Needle
Stitch markers or scrap yarn
Stitches Used:
Ch= chain
Sc = single crochet
Hdc = half double crochet
Additional Terms
F-hdc= foundation half double crochet: ch3, yo, insert hook in 3rd Ch from hook, yo, pull up a loop, (3 loops on hook) yo, pull through one loop, yo, pull through all loops. Next f-hdc: yo, insert hook in bottom of previous f-hdc, yo, pull up a loop,(3 loops on hook)yo, pull through one loop, yo, pull through all loops. Continue until you have the needed amount of f-hdc.
Gauge:
Guage is not really important with this pattern. (See pattern notes)
Measurements:
13 ½ inches (for reference. Keep in mind a different hook and different weight yarn will yield different measurements)
Additional Notes:
This stocking is worked in the round, starting at the toe, moving a long to the body and then coming back to the heel. Chains at the beginning do not count as a stitch. Guage is not really important for this pattern. You can make this stocking bigger by using a heavier weight yarn and a bigger hook.
Pattern
Toe
Rnd 1: Ch 9. Sc in 2nd stitch from hook. Sc in each stitch across, placing 3 stitches in the last ch. Place a stitch marker in the 2nd stitch of the 3 stitches just made. Working on the other side, sc in each stitch across, placing 2 stitches in the last stitch, which is also the first stitch of the round. Place a stitch marker in the last stitch made. Slst in the first stitch to join.
Rnd 2-7: ch1. Sc in each stitch until you reach the stitch marker, place 3 stitches in the marked stitch, continuing to move the stitch marker to the center increase. Sc in each stitch around placing 3 stitches in the next mark stitch( moving stitch marker to center increase), then sc in the rest of the stitches and slst in 1st sc of round. ( You will have 36 stitches after the 7th round)
Rnd 8-11: Ch. 1. Sc in each stitch around. Slst to 1st stitch of the round.
Body:
Rnd 12-25: Ch 2. Hdc in each stitch around. Slst to 1st stitch to join.
Rnd 26: f-hdc 18, or if you prefer ch 18 loosely, skip 18 stitches, and then hdc in the next 18 stitches. Slst in 1st f-hdc. Rnd 27-42: Ch 2, hdc in each stitch around, including the 18 f-hdc. Slst to 1st stitch.
Row 43: With fur yarn, ch1, and sc in each stitch around.
Fasten off.
Heel:
Rnd 1: You will be working around the opening of the heel. With the red yarn, attach yarn in the 10th f-hdc, with a slst. Next, ch1 and sc in this and each stitch across continuing around to the other side of the heel opening. Continue placing an sc in each stitch. Slst to first stitch to join. (You should have 36 stitches around the heel.)
Note: the decreases(sc2tog) are being placed at each end of the stocking.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in the next 7 stitches, Sc2tog twice, sc in the next 14 stitches, sc2tog twice, sc in remaining stitches. Slst to join.(32)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in next 6 stitches, sc2tog twice, sc in next 12 stitches, sc2tog, and sc in remaining stitches. Slst to first st. (28)
Rnd 4: Ch1, sc in next 5 stitches, sc2tog twice, sc in next 10 stitches, sc2tog twice, and sc in remaining stitches. Slst to first stitch. (24)
Rnd 5: Ch 1,sc in next 4 stitches, sc2tog twice, sc in next 8 stitches, sc2tog twice, sc in remaining stitches. Slst to first stitches. (20)
Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in next 3 stitches, sc2tog twice, sc in next 6 stitches, sc2tog twice, sc in remaining stitches. Slst to first stitch. (16)
Rnd 7: Ch 1, sc in next 2 stitches, sc2tog twice, sc in next 4 stitches, sc2tog twice, sc in remaining stitches. Slst to first stitch. (12)
Rnd 8: Ch 1, sc, sc2tog twice, sc in next 2. Sc2tog twice. Sc in remaining st. Slst to first st. (8) Fasten off. Then with your tapestry needle sew remaining stitches closed.
Loop:
With fur yarn, attach to the last row( fur row) at the back of the stocking, Ch 8 and then slst into the same stitch.
Finishing:
With tapestry needle, weave in all remaining tail ends.
